About Aquila Constellation
Aquila Constellation is a 2003 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40DS. We purchased her in the UK in December 2018 and sailed her to the Scilly Isles, across the Bay of Biscay, down the Atlantic coast of Spain & Portugal to beautiful destinations across the Med.
In 2019 we equipped her for this voyage. She’s significantly upgraded and renewed in many areas. She had all new standing and running rigging in 2019. Her stern seal and original P Bracket were replaced. She has new mainsail, dinghy, we added an AIS VHF, Calorifer, Solar panels and wind turbine, new batteries and upgrades to her plumbing and wiring, covers and electronics, not to mention new high quality upholstery in the saloon, making her feel like a real home from home.
The pandemic delayed our departure until the spring of 2021. What a great voyage it has been! It’s been such an adventure but it’s time for a new one for us. So we’re, reluctantly, ready to say goodbye to our fantastic boat.
We’ve found the Sun Odyssey 40DS to be the almost ideal boat for the voyages we’ve made and would recommend her for an Atlantic crossing too, if that’s your ambition.
She has everything you need – with her protected helm position, easily driven, stiff and sea worthy hull, masthead rig and spacious interior and cockpit with panoramic views from the saloon.
She has a spacious well ventilated forward owners cabin with its own heads and an aft cabin with plenty of space. A sea worthy and practical galley, and plenty of storage for paddle boards, kayaks, guitars, art supplies etc.
Aquila Constellation is the shoal draft version of the 40Ds – so you can get closer to the beach or into the best spot in the anchorage with her 1.5M draft.
In light winds you’ll appreciate her easily deployed cruising chute and in heavier conditions you’ll marvel at her fantastic tracking under sail – you can just let the autopilot take the strain!
At 40 Feet with a moderately light displacement you’ll also find when the wind gets up the loads are much more manageable for a small crew with manual equipment than on larger or heavier yachts, making the experience more exciting and less stressful!
You’ll appreciate the ease that comes with a reliable manual furling system for the mainsail and a bullet proof headsail roller furler which makes it easy to optimise the sail plan for the conditions. And with all lines led back the cockpit you can control everything from within easy reach of the helm, making single handing her a real option.
Aquila Constellation is equipped to handle long multi days passages shorthanded with Autopilot, AIS, and Radar. And when you arrive you’ll have power and fresh water to enjoy the anchorage with her solar and wind charging systems and a small efficient water maker.
You’ll find being able to store a hard bottomed dingy on either the davits or fore deck cradle a massive bonus on a 40 foot boat, which means in an anchorage it’s no hassle to lift the dingy in the evening, and then sleep better knowing its defiantly going to be there in the morning!
When you do want to go to the marina you’ll appreciate her bow thruster that makes stern-to mooring easy and her boom tent and Bimini that keep things cool inside on hot summer days in the Med, together with walk through access from the stern.
